Role Clarity Script
This is a word-for-word script for moments when ownership is unclear and the ambiguity is starting to cost something. It is designed to surface the gap without assigning blame — and to leave you with a named owner, a consult list, and an escalation path.
Use it when
You're absorbing work that belongs elsewhere.
Decisions keep drifting back to you without a clear owner.
A conversation about roles is overdue but the framing hasn't been right.
What you'll do
Name the decision or situation where ownership is unclear.
State what is currently ambiguous about who holds it.
Propose a decision owner and a consult list.
Define the escalation path if there is disagreement.
The script
"Here is the decision that needs to be made." State it clearly. One sentence.
"Here is what is currently unclear about who owns it." Name the ambiguity directly — not as a complaint, but as a gap that needs closing.
"I propose this owner and this consult list." A recommendation is easier to react to than to invent from scratch.
"If there is disagreement, here is how we escalate." Name the path before the pressure arrives.
Result
